Debary Elementary School Reviews

The principal, Mr. Rawlings has shown more dedication than I have ever seen from a director in a primary school. I am so pleased with him! The teachers have a great curriculum and are very creative!

The Debary Elementary School teachers and staff are an amazing crew that teach the children with compassion, deligence, and pride. I am very grateful to the staff at Debary Elementary for all that they do.

DEbary Elementary is an outstanding school. The teachers are compassionate and work hard to see that the students do their best. The principal and vice principal are role models for our children treating them with respect and leading the school to be the great school it is. I am pround to enroll my child here and feel comfortable that they are getting what they need to move on to middle school.

I think that this school is extraordinary in all areas. I believe that the principal, Mr. Atkinson, deserves a lot of credit for all that has been accomplished since he has been in this school. He goes about doing what has to be done in a very quiet manner, but does what has to be done, and isn't that what we really need, as students, parents, guardians, teachers, etc. We are proud that our teachers at this school treat our students with respect and that our students/children are being taught to show the same respect back to the teachers. I believe with all my heart that we have the best teachers and students to be found. Keep it up, Debary, and THANK YOU.

This is my son's second year at this school and his teacher this year is just as good, if not better then last year. From what I have experienced the staff is excellent, and my son is doing well and really likes his shcool.

My daughter has beeen going to this school since the first grade and has thrived as an individual both scholastically and personally. Wonderful teachers, could not ask for a better school for my child!!!!!!

I give this school a D-. Changes in principle, teachers who have 'pet students,' work that is not challenging, a guidance counselor who utilizes her own personal problems as a guideline for making recommendations to parents with their own children, over crowded school, children who are allowed to be disrespectful to others and use inappropriate language (maybe that is a parenting issue and not a school issue). I am unhappy with this school on many levels. What is good with this school? It is clean and well kept, Principle Atkinson is willing to work with parents (for the most part, when he makes the time to do so), the nurse is very nice and extra curricular activities have improved this year.

This school has a wonderful teaching staff and great administrators! Both my children go here and I absolutely think it is top notch.

I LOVE this school! Both my children have been here since kindergarden & are onto middle school next year. I have friends whose children have gone on to middle school and they can't believe how truly 'spoiled' we are (were) by the staff here. I & my children will truly miss this school...

DeBary Elementary School is a wonderful school. My son's Teacher is exceptional and really works one on one with his students to help them. The staff and administrators are great. The school has a very open line of communication with the parents and wonderful programs to include parents. I volunteer in my child's classroom and am very pleased with the cooperation in letting Parents help out. A+ school.

I have two boys who attend DeBary Elementary and I am extremely thankful to have them attend such a involved and caring school. Don't get me wrong, there have been issues but none that have not been addressed by school officials. I would like to see the children have more in school activities that they can express all that energy they have. Sometimes the children seem as if they are being herded from one thing to another with little time to be a child.

The teachers have been wonderful at DeBary Elementary. They are very professional, know how to help each child to meet thier educational needs, and are very involved. I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the school, as I was considering a private school as an alternative option since my son attended a prep pre-school. But, I am very happy that I decided to try the school and would recommend it. The 'A' rating is deserved.

Debary Elementary is extremely overcrowded in K-2nd grades. They have 40-42 kids in classes with two teachers and a part time assistant. The kids do not get the extra help they need because the teachers do not have the time to help each one at their different levels.

4 principles in 5 years, I witnessed a teacher pulling a child by his arm (roughly and almost enough to be considered child abuse)off stage last year, and the school nurse calls me at work for what is clearly NOT an emergency. My child was five feet from my car, but not allowed to step in...I had to drive all the way to the end of the pick up/drop off 'area.' I have no other choice but to send my child to this school. My child was in private school. I have seen a change in behavior (unhappy) despite waiting out the 'adjustment' period. Most of the staff members seem VERY nice. I haven't bothered to meet this principle...what's the point? Lastly, any school that has portables is clearly over crowded. I have no problem with the academics or my child's teacher.

My child transferred from another school in the area. What a big difference! My child loves to go to school each day. The staff is very friendly.

I love this school for my son. The teachers are very prepared and experienced. However, there is no gifted program as of yet, and the art program leaves much to be desired. Great neighborhood and very friendly. The principle seems qualified but he isn't out there meeting parents from what I've seen. Wonderful school despite these things.

Here's hoping we can keep a pricipal for more than a year!! My son has seen 4 principals in 5 years!

The Teachers for the most part are attentive to parental concerns. There are instructors that do not care for the parents involvement. They look at parent volunteers as intrusive, although used appropriately this is an untapped area of expertise. The music, PE and art classes are above average. The parent definately needs to stay on top of the teachers when it comes to educating the children. The teachers sometimes lose focus, but most of this is due to class size and organizational problems associated with this issue. Overall very responsive to parent concerns. Faculty, with a few exceptions, will work diligently to correct any educational deficiencies. We are now on our third principal in about 4 yrs. This lack of leadership does hinder a clear vision for the school and what is expected from the faculty. Overall, excellent school.

Great parental participation and an outstanding teaching and support staff. Getting a little too large for the area but the Principal and staff are doing an outstanding job accomodating the additional students. Academics A+, Extracurricular exceptional for size - (parent)

My son started kindergarden this year at the school. I don't feel that they have enough time to spend with the kids that need extra help. They bring homework home, and I end up having to teach my kid instead of the teacher. My son is in class for 8 hours a day. A 5 year old is not going to want to work on school work every day when he gets home after being there all day. I don't agree with the things they expect these kids to know at such a young age.

Teachers are extremely dedicated and creative. School system needs additional resources to enhancing reading education. Current curriculum includes art, music and P.E.

Debary was great, not the best, but okay. I just hated being in a portable because the school is overcrowded. But the teachers are great!

My children are in first and fifth grades. Both have attended DeBary since kindergarten. It's a beautiful school although I don't care much for the open layout. And, it's too bad they already have so many portables. In the past five years, we've had only one 'bad' teacher -- she's no longer with the school. The teachers are supportive of our children's progress and learning. The school does have issues with parking and child drop-off/pick-up safety. Activities are geared to the stay-at-home parents, offering little opportunity for working parents to volunteer or 'get involved' in school activities. Overall, though, we are extremely pleased with the school and faculty.

In comparison to our previous school, Heathrow Elem. I'm disappointed. My biggest concern is for safety. There is seldom teachers at the drop off/pick up area on time, and never as many as truly needed. The crossing area at the entrance to the school sometimes never has anyone there to help the children cross in front of cars leaving the school. I'm amazed no one has been hurt. As for the educational value of the school. It almost seems as though the teachers have made it easy for the students to do well. I've yet to see my 4th grader feel like the work is hard, or even challenging. So far this year, she's not been asked to do one home project. And checking your own homework doesn't teach you how to do it right, if you've gotten it all wrong. They won't admit falure in front of everyone!

I have been impressed with the school thusfar. My son is in first grade and we are new to the area and it has been a significant improvement over the previous school. He has ADHD and I am appreciative of his teacher's awareness an willingness to work with us. However, I would like to see involvement with the school counselor or psychologist as well. That is not something that has been offered, so I think it is something that the parent must aggressively pursue. Time will tell. The principal is new and I do not yet have a feel for her to provide an assessment. Overall though, I love the school. There is a great deal of community involvement and spirit that has been lacking in other schools.

I have a daughter in 4th grade at DeBary and I am very pleased. I have only been at this school since she was in 2nd grade. I was not that involved with the school until last year but I have nothing but good things to say. Her teacher this year is excellent and takes her time to make sure that my daughter does well. There are still quite a few kids in her class but she tries her best for that one on one time. I am glad that they switched principals this year.

I was happy with this school until they changed principals. We are moving to get out of this school district.

I think that Debary Elementary is a good school it is still a fairly new school and is working out the problems and glitches that a new school has to work. Yes I know it has been open now 6-7 years now but it is still making changes and fine tunning the problems that arise.

I have two children at DeBary Elementary and I feel that they are receiving great information. I have found the teachers to be very helpful and full of ideas whenever I have needed their help in the education of my children.

I had a son in the 5th grade. I did not care for my son 5th grader teacher. She had no discipline in the class, and seem to cater to the 'Popular' kids who's parents were well off or (as my son put it) bought her gifts. I went to her on more than 1 incident of my child being made to look bad in her class because he was on the free lunch program, and each time she would say she would 'Look into it' and yet nothing ever changed. And she never tried to speak to the kids that would make fun of my son and call him names because of our finances. Both my children went to Orange City elementary prior to this, and in my opinion I would rate Orange City an A+ and DeBary a D-

All parent involvement oppurtunities are aimed at stay at home parents. I have offered to volunteer and never once was called.
