South Seminole Middle School Reviews

My son attended this school for 7th and 8th grade and did well at this school, there is zero tolerance for fighting and the teachers (atleast the ones my son had) genuinely care for the students and their education. I have another child at this school who has been there for all three years and I have been very happy with his years there as well and he takes advanced classes and does well in them.

The teachers should want to help the students more

I'm surprised at some of the comments on this site. This school has made huge improvements and the pre-IB program is great for advanced students. Granted they expect a lot from the students and the discipline is firm, but isn't that what you want? Teacher turn over is low with many of them teaching here for years. This is one of the best middle schools in the Orlando area for preparing kids for high school and college.

I am very disappointed in the overall performance of this school. They seem all too ready to quickly send a child home on 'suspension' for even minor infraction, rather than do their jobs and teach. I can't wait for my child to move on to high school. This has been a nightmare for all of us.

PRE-IB PROGRAM - The 2006-07 Academic Year was SSMS's first year to offer the Pre-IB program. We came from a private school, academic environment and were very nervous about putting our daughter in a public school. WERE WE SURPRISED! Our daughter had an excellent year, worked hard, had challenging, creative assignments and really blossomed in the Pre IB Program. I highly recommend this track for a motivated, focused student. My only criticism is that the gifted program is somewhat weak and is used more as a private tutoring program rather than an enrichment program for gifted student. But, the Pre IB Program more than made up for this weakness. Great teacher and administration response to any concern, no matter how small.

The teachers and administration seem more concerned with their numbers and FCAT scores than the students. Teaching for the tests is a disaster and the attitude of the students reflect this. We have had an unfavourable experience the entire time our child has been in this school. Their disciplinary actions are ridiculous. It seems much easier to just suspend a student rather than work with them on minor infractions. This school has much work to do to become an acceptable school, which is really what an A school is all about. Caring about the students, and the actual education SHOULD come first. It doesn't in SSMS. Very sad indeed. I won't be sorry to see my child move on from this experience. It's mostly been negative for us.

I am extreamly disappointed in South Seminole. I was not impressed with most of the teachers I have met through the 3 years my 3 children have attended. I have found them over stressed disinterested, and some in need of retraining. If this is an 'A' school then I understand why Florida schools are near the bottom of the national list.

My son started here mid-semester in the Fall due to a move from Lake Mary (Greenwood Lakes Middle). The music program was less intense, but the academics seem to be solid. There appears to be less access to technology (computers)and there are less extracurricular activities than Greenwood Lakes. The sports programs are average, but it would have been nice if there were more communication to the parents. The school newsletter goes out quarterly. The school building/property is well maintained. It would be nice if there were more 'elective' classes available (for example: Home Ec is cancelled for next school year, shop class and art should be available in addition to Band or language)

Very happy with the school last year. My daughter had a hard time getting used to the whole Middle school thing & the teachers took their time and gave her the help she needed to adjust.

It is a great school but lacks a good boys basketball program which puts its students at a disadvatage upon entering and competing for a spot on a high school sports team.
