Hillcrest Elementary School Reviews

Both of my two daughters has attended Hillcrest. The oldest will be going to 5th grade and the little one will be going to 2nd grade. We are a Spanish speeking family and I wanted for my daughters to keep talking and to be able to read in Spanish. So this is why we chose Hillcrest. Teachers are great and they do work really hard with the students. I am so content that Hillcrest will not be closing. Hopefully it will never be closed. I will recommend this school to any parent that wants their child to be able to speak a second language.

My grandaughter is in third grade at Hillcrest, and it is a great school, the idea of closing it and putting the lower grades with the middle school does not seem like the best plan for the students. Schools should be the most important thing, but they are always the ones to suffer.

My daughter has attended Hillcrest for several years. She fluently speaks and reads chapter books in the second language. There is an emphasis on celebrating different cultures represented at the school (Spanish, French, Vietnamese). There is a substantial waiting list for admission to the magnet program. The latest OCPS plan is not to 'close' the school but to move the program to a larger campus nearby because it has become so popular. As one poster said, the program is not a good fit for English-speaking children who are struggling with academics because 1.5 to two hours per day is in the second language. We have had very good teachers overall and like the new principal (in 2008), Dr. Gonzalez.

It is so disappointing that Orange County would even consider closing a school with an important foreign language program that serves not only those who want to learn another language but also special ESOL programs for numerous groups. The parents are involved in all aspects of the school and know all the teachers, principal and students. It is an amazing community and Orlando will definitely lose more than they realize if they close this special place.

I am extremely dissapointed that Hillcrest has been chosen as one of the schools targeted for closing due to budget cuts. We have a principal that really cares about our children's education and well being. There are extra curricular activities offered to compliment existing programs . The parents are very involved and the teachers are outstanding. Our child was accepted through the lottery system and is taking advantage of the foreign language program. Dr Gonzalez, the principal has taken the school to the next level. We hope that the powers to be acknowledge the advantages offered by this great school.

I have to say, since I havent seen it mentioned yet, is that this is a Foreign Language Magnet. Meaning that it offers Spanish, French and Vietnamese immersion, as well as serves ESOL students. This is accomplished in addition to elementary curriculum. The children have the potential to be fluent in whatever language tract they are in. The effort and dedication put out by the staff and teachers is remarkable and admirable. I have felt nothing but warmth, acceptance and a large open-door policy for parents. The staff and teachers put in 110% not only in the classroom, but in extra-curricular activities such as a running club, soccer, tennis, etc. I did notice that FCAT scores in some areas are a little under average in some areas but I bet that the ESOL students may have a greater challenge than native English speakers taking this test. Overall, excellent school, excellent staff.

School is zoned in mainly affluent neighborhoods that consists of many SAHM's who have the ability to keep up with the high acedemic demands of the school. If you're a single parent and/or if your child is average to below-average acedemically by median standards, you'll find it difficult to keep up.

The teachers and staff at Hillcrest Elementary are 100% devoted to their students. My children have attended for 4 years now, and we have had a wonderful experience.

I find that Hillcrest Elementary is a wonderful school. I am however disappointed at some of the chages that occured when the new principal took over. The way the class structure was set up prior to her arrival worked well. My thought is if it works why change? Now our children are combined with other grades, my child is in third, but the majority of students in his class are ;in second grade. I feel that this causes the older children to limit their maturity to the majority. That does not work for me. Also many of the teachers that were there decided to leave when the new principal came, makes you wonder why.

Hillcrest has been great for both of my children. The foreign language skills and respect for other cultures that is learned in this school far exceeds what I have seen in other schools. The school has standards and discipline of a private school. The teachers that I have encountered walk the fine line of being strict but caring and fair. My only complaint is the children need a little more recess/downtime as the school day is slightly longer due to the foreign language program.
