ferguson pottery's Bio

I’ve been making art since I could touch crayon to paper, or wall as the case may have been. Mostly a self taught artist, I have been working exclusively in clay for the past five years.

There’s a funny story that goes: A potter won a million dollars and when asked what he would do with the money he said “I guess I’ll just make pots until the money runs out”. I love that joke because it taps into the obsession I have with clay. I make pots because I have to, I hunger for it and my inspiration comes from my youth’s obsession with textiles and graphic design. When I was fifteen I was making and selling clothes to my schoolmates, family received their gifts wrapped in homemade paper and I painted the walls of my bedroom with my latest design ideas.

My pottery is a reflection of my youth. It is hearty and it’s made to endure. Many parts are unglazed and errant marks are not corrected. The beauty of the piece is in its imperfections, for these are truly handmade pieces from my heart. My work is mostly functional in nature. I want people to use the pieces I create and for these pieces to become part of their homes and part of the fabric of their own lives. Nothing brings me greater joy than knowing my “babies” are sent out into the world and loved.
